Failing at Slow Living on a Tiny Scottish Island
Join us as we experience the pros and cons of slow island life, living in our van on the remote Scottish island of Uist in the Outer Hebrides. In this video, we begin our adventure at a picturesque beach park-up, surrounded by stunning coastal views and the soothing sounds of the sea. From there, we embark on a series of explorations that showcase the unique charm and vibrant life of this tiny island
Watch as we experience the traditional Highland Games, complete with bagpipes and local competitions. Encounter wildlife like highland cows, reindeer, and join us on our search for otters along the coast.
We enjoy the slow pace of island life but also face challenges like unpredictable weather and the isolation that comes with living in such a remote place. Despite the struggles, the beauty and tranquility of Uist make it all worthwhile.

⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute, we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But then we were back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire!! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and made our way to Japan. We enjoyed a three-month Japanese Adventure and then got back to Martha for some new European Adventures. After an incredible three-month Scottish road trip, we have now packed up our van and are heading to Australia for a new van life adventure!

Keely, the best thing I did in life was to delete my Facebook and Instagram accounts. It meant losing some connection, but if those connections are just on line their not worth much. It was very freeing and I don't miss them anymore. Here in the states(USA) there's so much hate and negativity and people have become relentless even on line. Just so glad to done with it. One more thing...this isn't judgement more of a funny memory. My oldest granddaughter turned 24 two weeks ago. When she was little she would would come out of the lake or pool with bathing suit bottom between her cheeks and her mother would call to her and say you have a hungry butt. Lol. Moral of the story " pull your bottom out of that hungry butt before the camera gets on it and carry on! Lol love and hugs from Michigan❤❤❤

Outer Hebrides Island Scottish Garlic is the everyday language spoken here. South Uist Highland Games, we visited this thrilling event, to enjoy Scottish Highland dancers, wearing their family tartan kilts. Scottish Highland band playing bagpipes/ drums, traditional music, we enjoyed watching the Scottish Highland Games we watched the men throwing, very heavy metal stops, the furthest one wins .and there are many more fun games to watch also. Santa Claus decided to relax here for summer too, so there are the large healthy Raine deer enjoying the emerald green grass, and tranquility. The Highland herd and hairy goats enjoy this natural island. The Otters enjoy lots of large crabs here, but they can only be seen early in the morning or at dusk when they are out and about. North Uist over the long causeway on the west side there are beautiful beaches with cream sand turquoise water and emerald green grass pastures. The water is very cold but sooooo refreshing. The sea scape is just like a tropical island, ocean beach scenery. Beautiful large beach to see the breathtaking sunset. .

What a surprise to hear you mention Cheesebay, many a happy holiday I've had there with my grandparents who lived at number 2 Cheesebay. Their house and henhouse are long gone now and a newer house is now there. There also used to be a "black house" at number 1, the old stone built, thatched cottage, no toilet, no electricity and smokey peat burning on the fire. The woman who lived there was named Catriona (don't know if I spelled that properly) who my gran swore, milked my grans cow if she didn't get there early enough. Great times long gone. Loved the enthusiasm for Scotland you guys have. Fun fact, Draw a line from the Giants Causeway at Bushmills Ireland to Fingal's cave on the island of staff and we are linked by the Causeway. Yes Scotland gets mad in the summer especially the NC500, but there is a lot more to Scotland apart from the West Coast on the NC500, there is the central belt and the borders. I see you met our Native Midge, they keep visitor numbers down, but bet you didn't spot our elusive Haggis in the wild, only the one that sadly got caught and put on shelves....😉

Greece and Bulgaria seem to have issues with harassing campers. Maybe it depends on the area of the country. Their aggressiveness would be how violent drug addicts would act. My instinct would be to fight, but not wise to step out. You handled it perfectly.

Wow such a stunning island. I still need to see the outer Hebrides in person. It’s like another world.

Guys, so good, has taken me 3 days to watch due to other stuff going on but oh my you’ve done us Scots proud. Better than any tourist board advert for showcasing the best of our land. We last did the NC500 a couple of years ago but in Sept. It was nowhere near as busy as you found it. Shoulder season i.e. May/early June and Sept/Oct definitely quieter. The unusual shaped peak you see at 3:41 is called Suilven and along with nearby Stac Pollaidh dominates the horizon in the area. We stayed nearby and it was gorgeous countryside. But the midges are ferocious up there 😮! Cost us a fortune in Smidge 😂. This summer has been bonkers but the mix of rain and sun is why everything is so lush. Scotland never fails to get beneath your skin.
